HURLEY -- The top-seed Hurley Midgettes extended their season with a 80-43 win over No. 4 seed Phillips in the second round of the WIAA Division 3 Regional tournament.

"I thought we played at a level that is playoff worthy," Hurley coach Melissa Oja said.

The Midgettes (22-0) advance to the regional championship game against No. 2 seed Ladysmith in Park Falls on Saturday at 1 p.m. Ladysmith defeated No. 6 seed Park Falls 45-19 on Thursday.

"It'll be a big game," Oja said. "They are very comparable to us. They have a good post player and some nice guards. It will be a battle and hopefully we will win out."

Phillips ends its season at 13-9.

"I thought we played well," Phillips assistant coach Lynn Arndt said. "Hurley has a nice team. They are very physical. We wish them the best of luck in the tournament."

Early in the first quarter, both teams battled for the lead.

With 3:34 left in the first quarter, senior Kayla Windt made a bucket to put Hurley up 7-6. The Midgettes never trailed after that.

Windt added a triple to extend the Midgettes' lead to 10-6.

Windt finished the first quarter with five straight points. She scored 13 points in the first quarter.

The Midgettes led 19-7 heading to the second quarter. Hurley extended their lead to 35-14 at halftime.

Phillips had 19 of its 27 turnovers in the first half. Hurley coughed up the ball 19 times in the game.

The Midgettes continued the scoring barrage in the second half. Hurley outscored the Loggers 45-29 in the second half to secure the win.

Windt led all scorers with 25 points. Senior Brittany Czerneski netted 19 points and junior Jesse Mackey added 11.

"Kayla and I had a nice talk yesterday about it being her senior year," Oja said. "We talked about giving 110 percent because it could be your last. She was all over the floor tonight, whether on offense or on defense. She also had great poise and control tonight.

"Brittany had a big game inside. The difference was, she was looking to the hoop and that made her stronger. Jesse had a good night with her defense and the way she controlled the tempo of the game."

Junior Lindsey Wanish led Phillips with 12 points. Fellow juniors Jackie Krell and Erin Frase added 10.

"We will be losing two seniors in Lydia Trzecinski and Kayla Skotzke. They did great and they have a bright future ahead of them," Arndt said. "Next year we will be very competitive. We were second in the Marawood-North and hopefully we could be first next season."
