IRONWOOD – Gogebic-Iron Marine Corps League Detachment 1133 held a spaghetti dinner Sunday at the Breakwater in Ironwood to benefit the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette and the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King.
Detachment Commandant Gary Kusz said the money raised is used to help fund activities for the veterans at the two facilities.
Kusz said the fundraiser has been taking place for around 10 years. He said the idea is to help contribute to the daily routines at the two homes and provide extra things to do.
“We all served, and the ones in the homes often don’t have family around,” Kusz said. “So what we’re really doing is helping to take care of our brothers.”
Detachment members bought and sold dinner tickets leading up to the event; tickets were also available at the restaurant.
“Breakwater has always been very good to us,” Kusz said.
The Gogebic-Iron Marine Corps League Detachment is a non-profit that participates in community events including a highway cleanup and attends funeral services for fellow Marines. Kusz said an honorable discharge is the only membership requirement.
“If there’s former Marines or F.M.F. (Fleet Marine Force) Corpsmen interested in joining, they can contact me,” he said. “We meet the third Wednesday of the month at the (Ironwood) Legion.”
