Woman reports apparent scam

IRONWOOD — An Ironwood woman gave out her bank account number in an apparent scam attempt on Thursday, according to an Ironwood Public Safety Department report.

The 72-year-old woman received a telephone solicitation call from a company called “Health Group” and in talking with the company, she gave out the number, according to the IPSD report.

When the woman went to the Associated Bank in Hurley, bank employees tried calling the number that the company had left with the woman, but the operator on the other end of the phone hung up on the bank employees.

The bank employees then changed the Ironwood woman’s bank account number.

When the Daily Globe called the number that was left with the woman, 866-753-7321, an overseas operator answered. She said she wasn’t connected to the company, but she could probably get in touch with a company representative today between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

“I just work for an answering service,” the woman said.

When asked why someone from the company would hang up on the bank employees, the operator said she thought people in the United States were educated and asked how someone could be so stupid as to give out a bank account number.

The operator said the company is based in Houston. She said the name of the company is Your Health Group, but the Daily Globe couldn’t find any listing for that company name on the Internet.
