MERCER, Wis. — More than 100 kids turned out for the annual Mercer Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday at the Mercer School.

According to club members, the event has been taking place for over 20 years, starting off with real hard boiled eggs before switching to plastic.

Different age divisions searched in different parts of the school, and after gathering as many eggs as possible, the kids dined on hot dogs, hot chocolate and their candy.

“The school has been great in letting us have this here,” club member Pete Wetzler said. “We want to give a big thanks to Erik Torkelson (district administrator) and the staff for helping out with this. They turn on the lights, open the door and let us use the school and the cafeteria. We really appreciate it.”

The event originally took place outside, but for the past 15 years, the hunt was moved indoors because of the unpredictable Wisconsin weather.

Saturday showed how the weather can be, with rain pouring down on snow outside. Despite the soggy weather, kids were able to find eggs with no troubles.

“This event really does get more and more popular each year,” Wetzler said. “It’s a fun event.”

The Easter Bunny also made a visit, helping kids find eggs in unexpected places, and to celebrate, each participant also went home with a stuffed bunny.

“The kids have a great time,” Wetzler said. “There is good food, lots of good chocolate and it is just a nice event.”

Despite Easter being over, the club isn’t taking a break just yet. They are planning their annual spaghetti feed on June 29 at the Mercer Community Center, as well as events during the annual Loon Day Festival on Aug. 7.

“Both events are big fundraisers for us,” Wetzler said. “And they are popular just like this one. We want to thank everyone for all of their support, especially Dave and Louise Minisan for their support during the egg hunt. The entire club really appreciates it.”
