Anita I. Lopez


VERONA, Wis. — Anita I. Lopez, 84, of Verona, and a former longtime Ironwood, Mich., resident, died peacefully on Monday, April 8, 2013, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg.

She was born on Oct. 5, 1928, in Ironwood, the daughter of Paul and Isabel (Matrella) Chouinard. She attended grade school in Ironwood and graduated in 1946 from Tony High School in Tony. After graduation, she worked at Michigan Bell for several years.

On Sept. 6, 1952, she was united in marriage to Anthony “Tony” Lopez at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Ironwood by the late Rev. Conrad Dishaw. Anita and Tony owned and operated Lopez IGA Foodliner in Ironwood. They moved from their home in Michigan to Verona in 2002.

Anita was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood and later St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Verona. Anita was an excellent cook and enjoyed bowling, knitting and playing cards. Most of all, she loved the company of her family and friends.

She will be greatly missed by a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Lori Lopez, of Verona, and daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Michael Lopez-Kaley, of La Crosse; granddaughters, Julia and Clare Lopez-Kaley; siblings, Patrick (Marge) Chouinard, of Hudson, and Pamela (Dave) Barr, of Four Corners, Wyo .; in-laws, Irene Halverson, of Ironwood, Albert (Joanne) Lopez, of Canyon, Minn., and George Wallis, of Hurley; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her wonderful husband, Tony, in 2005; her parents; brother, Kelly Chouinard; and in-laws, Mary Lou Wallis and Eugene Halverson.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, April 20, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood, with the Rev. Robb Jurkovich, celebrant, preceded by visitation beginning at 10 a.m. in the St. Joseph Family Room at the church.

A luncheon will follow in the parish hall.

The Rite of Committal and interment will take place at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood.

Range Funeral Service Inc. is assisting the family in Ironwood.
