Steve Balasz


LAKE GOGEBIC, Mich. — Steve Balasz, 95, of Lake Gogebic, died unexpectedly, Saturday, May 4, 2013, at his home.

He was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Bessemer, son of the late Steve and Julia (Beracko) Balasz. Steve attended Bessemer schools and graduated from the A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer with the class of 1935.

He was employed at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Sidnaw, then the Anvil Mine and Sunday Lake Mine until their closing. Steve was also employed in construction in Wisconsin and as a carpenter until retirement. He built his own house and enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.

From May 12, 1942, until Dec. 11, 1945, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Ramsay.

Steve is survived by a brother, Edwin (Mary Lou), of Adrian; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Robert and John; and sisters, Mary Balasz and Helen Felix.

Cremation has taken place at the Range Crematory in Hurley.

A memorial service will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ramsay on Saturday, May 11, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Timothy Steckling will officiate.

Steve’s family will receive relatives from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Saturday.

Internment will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Bessemer.

Range Funeral Service and Crematory and the Frick-Zielinski Funeral Home of Bessemer has been entrusted with funeral arrangements.
