Bessemer hosts Memorial Day service at Hillcrest Cemetery

BESSEMER — Monday morning brought a special Memorial Day service at Hillcrest Cemetery. “For too many Americans, Memorial Day is just a day off and the start of summer,” said Mayor John Frello, “and not a tribute to soldiers who have fallen.”

City Manager Micheal Uskiewicz gave the address. Uskiewicz said he was humbled to be given the opportunity to speak at a service honoring service members.

“We are a grateful nation and can stand together and say thank you,” Uskiewicz said.

“We praise them and thank God for their courage,” Uskiewicz said.

Uskiewicz cited John 15:13, “greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

The memorial service included the laying of a wreath at the memorial for fallen soldiers at Hillcrest.

Taps was played, and an honor guard shot off the traditional three shot volley.

A.D. Johnston band was on hand to play at the service.

“We thank God for the brave men and women for
