IRONWOOD — Local youth in the Ironwood Carnegie Library's summer drama camp have been working together since early last week to prepare for a performance Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the Ironwood Memorial Building auditorium. The kids, aged 11 and up, are from Ironwood and Bessemer.
Under the direction of Mary Hansen, the youth will perform, “The Golden Rooster,” “The Bremen Town Musicians,” and “Henny Penny.”
“I'm very, very proud of these kids,” Hansen said. “Some of them have never been on stage before, and it takes a lot of courage.”
Abbey Johnson is playing two different roles in Friday's performance, a cat in “The Bremen Town Muscians,” and the second daughter in “The Golden Rooster.”
She said she likes her role as a cat the best, because the animals in the play get to scare the robbers out of the house, and then get the house.
Practicing for the play “has been the most fun I've had all summer,” said Megan Gabka. She is “Foxy Woxy” in “Henny Penny” and a narrator in “The Golden Rooster.”
Getting involved in the plays has been a great opportunity for the kids to make new friends, said Hansen. Being onstage also gives them permission to be a little weird, she said.
Friday's performance of the three plays will last 30 minutes, and there is no cost to attend.
