Cause of house fire under investigation

IRONWOOD — The cause of a Tuesday night fire that destroyed an unoccupied house in Ironwood is under investigation.

Ironwood Public Safety Department fire officer Brandon Snyder is in charge of the investigation of the fire on Scott Street, near the Montreal River, about two blocks from the Knights of Columbus hall.

Around 10:35 p.m. Tuesday, a neighbor, Keith Lehto, reported seeing sparks coming from the house next to his.

According to an IPSD report, no one was living in the house that is at the end of a dead end street.

The owner was identified as John Rohan, of Milwaukee.

There’s a locked gate at the end of Scott Street, near the house.

A release from the IPSD said the house is at 456 Scott St., but the original complaint said it was at 357 Scott.

Two on-duty IPSD officers and six-off duty officers responded, along with nine volunteer firefighters.

At 11 p.m., the Hurley Fire Department was paged to provide mutual aid.

The fire was extinguished at 4:05 a.m. Wednesday.

The structure was a total loss.

Hurley police and Beacon Ambulance personnel also assisted, but there were no reports of any injuries.
