Bessemer hires new principal, athletic director

BESSEMER — Daniel Vander Velden, former dean of students and athletic director in Oshkosh, Wis., will begin duties as high school principal and athletic director today, after being hired at the Bessemer Area School District’s special board meeting Monday night.

Vander Velden was selected from a pool of 15 applicants, five of whom were interviewed. Contract negotiations have not been finalized, but it is anticipated that his contract will be for three years.

“I am well aware of the pride that Bessemer has in its schools, and I look forward to continuing to make Bessemer the school of choice in the Gogebic Range,” Vander Velden said.

Board member Al Gaiss said that he was extremely impressed with Vander Velden’s credentials and told him, “You’re going to love our community.”

Roof repairs are expected to begin soon, as board member Dave Osier said that estimates from the architect are expected today, bids will be posted, and the board would like to award the bid by Monday.
