Red Devils join National Dairy Council focus on drinking chocolate milk

IRONWOOD — Football players at Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood are drinking something different after games as part of the “Rethink Your Drink” campaign through the National Dairy Council.

Instead of water, juice or sports beverages, players are drinking chocolate milk.

“Each year different grants are available in different areas and this year we received a grant from the National Dairy Council,” Mary Hampston, school district food service director, said. “It’s a good connection between the kids and the program, because milk is so good for them. It’s been proven that it is a better recovery drink than anything else.”

After every game, players will be given chocolate milk, and according to Hampston, the campaign has been successful so far.

“They really like it,” Hampston said. “I have some asking for more milk. It’s really cool to see.”

In the future, Hampston would like to see the program continue with other sports.

“We wanted to start off the year with this, we went with football first, but grants can be written for other sports as well,” Hampston said. “Our first home game, we’re going to have prizes for the crowd through the grant and other things, so it’s really neat. I hope to have this continue with other sports.”
