Terry V. Gustavson

MERCER, Wis. — Terry V. Gustavson, 74, of Popko Circle West, Mercer, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, in the comfort of his home, with family.

He was born Nov. 14, 1938, in Chicago, son of the late Vernon Gustavson, and graduated from Amundsen High School there in 1956. He then attended Beloit College in Beloit, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in economics in 1961.

Terry enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 19, 1961, attended U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School, accepting a commission as an ensign on June 15, 1962, and was honorably discharged from active duty as a lieutenant junior grade on June 15, 1965.

Following his discharge, he worked as a claims adjuster for Allstate Insurance for a short time, then operated his own agency, Gustavson and Associates, in Delavan, retiring in 1999 and moving to Mercer. In his retirement, he worked as an agent for LBS Insurance in Mercer and Ironwood, Mich.

Terry was a member, past president and officer of the Williams Bay and Mercer Lions Club. He was also a member of Moose Lodge 1038 in Arizona City, Ariz. He loved being on the water sailing and boating, and also enjoyed horseback riding, snowmobiling, woodworking and building projects. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son-in-law and uncle, and will be dearly missed by all.

He was formerly married to Ellen Hawtree.

He then married Lynne M. Nesslar on Sept. 6, 1992, at Lake of the Falls in Mercer. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, Karl (Angela), Virginia, and daughter, Kelly (Patric) Mattek, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Jackson, Maggie, Julia and Eric; his father- and mother-in-law, Richard and Joanne Nesslar, Wisconsin and Arizona; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Michael Nesslar, Arizona, and Mark (Julie) Nesslar, Laurie (Gary) Scheer and Leane Hall, all of Wisconsin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Per Terry’s wishes, cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, at 1 p.m., at the Veterans Memorial Park in Mercer, conducted by Bob Downing and Marty Koleno of the Mercer Lions Club.

Full military honors will be accorded by the combined Mercer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9536 and Mercer-Manitowish Waters American Legion Post 424 Honor Guard.

Luncheon will follow at the Pine Tree Hideaway on Popko Circle.

In the event of rain, services and military rites will take place at the Carow Park pavilion on County J.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Dr. Kate Hospice, P.O. Box 770, Woodruff WI 54568, or the Rosholt Lions Camp, Rosholt WI 54473.
