Midgettes pick up first win

HURLEY — Hurley swept South Shore 25-19, 25-11, 27-25 Monday for its first win of the season.

“I was happy with the way we served,” Hurley coach Liz Constantini said. “I thought that was much better than it’s been the first two games. But even more so, I was happy with the way we were passing and setting up with our hitters. Even though we only had 13 kills, we had a lot of good swings, a lot of good opportunities, so that’s a big improvement from last week.”

The Cardinals made the Midgettes work for the final game, pushing it to 27 points.

“South Shore didn’t want to give up. It turned into a little bit of a battle. The kids kept working and it paid off,” Constantini said.

Hurley’s Felicia Herlevi had five kills and Kourtney Zacharias had four. Susan Walesewicz served well and totaled six aces. Julia Nelson had four aces and seven assists.

The Midgettes, like the Devils last week, weren’t hurt by South Shore’s Megan Gustafson (6-4).

“She’s going to get her kills,” Constantini said. “We just to have to try to play our game and stay on top.”

Hurley (1-2) travels to Butternut Thursday to open Indianhead Conference play.
