Donald D. McCoy

WAUSAU, Wis. — Donald D. McCoy, 80, of Ironwood, Mich., died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau.

He was born Sept. 24, 1932, in Aitkin, Minn., son of the late Jay and Minnie (Cole) McCoy, and graduated from Aitkin High School in 1951. He then served stateside in the U.S. Army as a baker at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1955.

Following his discharge, Don worked for his brother as a route salesman for Master Bread in Minnesota, then operated his own Master Bread route franchise in Gogebic and Iron counties for many years until retiring in the mid-1990s.

Don was a member of Ironwood American Legion Post 5. He enjoyed fishing, and loved spending time on his property in Oma growing raspberries, making wood and tending to his vegetable garden. He also enjoyed woodworking and building cabinets and tables, and was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.

On Dec. 28, 1963, he was married to Jeanne M. Connors at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hurley. She preceded him in death on Oct. 22, 2008.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy McCoy, of Ironwood; brother, Wayne (Ginny), Detroit Lakes, Minn .; sister, Phyllis Meyer, Manassas, Va .; his mother-in-law, Marie Connors, Hurley; three sisters-in-law, Mary Jo Connors, Jackson, Mich., Karen Connors, Green Bay, and Beth McCoy, Crosby, Minn .; numerous nieces and nephews; his dearest friend and neighbor, Dorothy Bunjevac, Ironwood; and numerous special friends.

Besides his parents and wife, Don was preceded in death by four brothers, Darrel, Everett, Dale and Ken; and his father-in-law, Matt Connors.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 6:30 p.m., preceded by visitation at 5:30 p.m., at McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home, 305 N. Lowell St., in Ironwood, with the Rev. Robb Jurkovich officiating.

A brunch will follow at Rigoni’s Inn, 925 E. Ayer St., in Ironwood.

Rite of Committal will take place Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood, where full military honors will be accorded by the Ironwood American Legion Post 5 Honor Guard.

Pallbearers will be Don Packmayer, Lawrence Kutz, Tony Pertile, Keith McCoy, Bucky Laabs, Mike O’Brien, Mike Czerneski and Ron Roy.
