Joseph James Tiziani

HORSESHOE BAY, Texas — Joseph James Tiziani M.D., 78, passed away on Aug. 27, 2013, at his home in Horseshoe Bay.

Joe was born in Ironwood, Mich., on July 22, 1935, to the late Joseph and Regina Tiziani. He received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan in June 1960.

Dr. Tiziani was board certified in psychiatry and neurology and completed his psychiatry residency at the Ypsilanti State Hospital in 1964. He served in the military at Fitzsimons Hospital in Denver from 1964-1966. Dr. Tiziani worked in various roles as a psychiatrist at the Ypsilanti State Hospital from 1966-1972; Mercywood Hospital from 1970-1989; and in private practice in Ann Arbor, Mich., from 1966-1989. He was medical director and chairman of psychiatry at St. Luke’s Health Center in Saginaw, Mich. from 1989-1991. Dr. Tiziani worked for the state of Michigan from 1992 until retiring in 1997.

Joe married Elizabeth “Betty” Bailey in 1960 and had two daughters, Lynn and Lisa. He married Barbara Grimm in 1985 and gained a stepdaughter, Jeanna.

Joe is survived by his wife, Barbara Tiziani, of Horseshoe Bay. He is survived by daughter, Lynn Torossian, and husband, Tom, of Milford, Mich., and their two children, Michael and Lauren; daughter, Lisa Pierce, and husband, Robert, of Fulton, Mo., and their three children, Adam, Jacob and Allison; daughter, Jeanna Berry, and husband, Charlie, of Iowa Park; two stepgrandchildren, Wesley and wife Rebekka, and Laura and husband, Zach; six stepgreat-grandchildren; his sister, Gloria Kaye, of Madison, Wis .; and various family members in Ironwood. Joe leaves behind many friends and extended family members in Michigan, Texas and across the country.

Joe was proud of Lynn, Lisa and Jeanna, all of whom work in health care. Lynn is president of Harper University and Hutzel Women’s Hospital. Lisa is also a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and is a family practice physician in Missouri, and Jeanna is chief operations officer of a large, multi-specialty clinic in Texas.

Joe will be remembered for his unique sense of humor that made everyone feel at ease, his tendency to laugh and make others laugh, his lively and engaging personality, and his ability to still be surprised at everyday occurrences. Joe had a zest for life and great love of family, friends and travel. He loved eating Italian food, peanut butter and desserts; listening to Frank Sinatra, Pavarotti and country music artists; visiting Italy and Lake Michigan; and living on Lake LBJ in Texas. He loved football and basketball and was an avid University of Michigan fan and a member of the Michigan Victors club for many years.

He loved to sing his own special rendition of “Melancholy Baby” and tell many colorful stories. Joe was known for his generosity to charities, willingness to help, and concern for others above himself. Joe had fun and lived his life to the fullest.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. at La Quinta Inn and Suites, 501 West FM 2147, Marble Falls TX 78654.
