Youth killed in accident
MONTREAL, Wis. — A 17-year-old area resident was killed in a 12:08 a.m. Saturday single-vehicle accident on Wisconsin 77 in Montreal in which the female driver of the vehicle received serious injuries.
Iron County Sheriff Tony Furyk said the vehicle left the highway, struck several trees and rolled onto its roof, killing the male passenger.
When deputies arrived on the scene, they immediately called for the Hurley Fire Department’s extrication equipment.
The vehicle was headed west when it appeared that the driver lost control, Furyk said.
The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Jean Zych.
The female driver was transported to Aspirus Grand View Hospital and later flown to another medical facility because of the severity of her injuries, Furyk said.
Hurley police and Beacon Ambulance also responded.
An accident reconstruction team from the Wisconsin State Patrol was called to assist in the investigation. The highway was closed Saturday morning and traffic was rerouted through Montreal while the reconstruction team was working.
No names were released on Saturday.
