Wakefield mayor elected to municipal league board

DETROIT — Wakefield Mayor Dick Bolen was selected 2013-’14 vice-president of the Michigan Municipal League Board of Trustees at the MML’s annual convention Thursday in Detroit.

Bolen was in Detroit for the remainder of the week at the MML convention, where he was elected by the 19-member board, which includes Ironwood City Manager Scott Erickson.

Bolen began serving on the board in 2010, and is in line to become the league president next year, which would make him the fourth president from the Upper Peninsula in 114 years, a news release said.

“It’s quite an honor and I’m humbled to be elected as vice-president and, of course, ultimately president,” Bolen said. “Having served on the league board for three years now I know it’s a rewarding experience.”

Bolen has served on Wakefield City Council since 2003. He’s serving his fourth term as mayor.

He has represented Wakefield on various authorities and commissions, and is a past member of the Wakefield School Board, where he served as president for nine years.

Bolen is active in veterans’ affairs as a member of the Wakefield VFW and American Legion posts.

At the end of 2010, Bolen retired as Gogebic County forester. He also served as president of the Wakefield-Bessemer Rotary Club.

Jacqueline Noonan, mayor of Utica, was elected president of the MML board.

The league has represented more than 500 Michigan cities, villages and townships since it was founded in 1899, making it one of the state’s longest running organizations.
