Mercer begins National Junior Honor Society

MERCER, Wis. - The inception ceremony of the newly  chartered Mercer National Junior Honor Society was held Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in the Jean Babic Memorial Library in the Mercer High School.

Administrator Erik Torkelson and Michelle Oldham, National Honor Society advisor, applied for and were granted a NJHS charter for the school.

The induction ceremony's theme was "Reach For the Stars."

Three Mercer freshmen Sydney Thompson, Caitlin Hiller and Camille Kich were inducted in the first class.

Oldham welcomed school board members, members of the faculty, parents and students to the ceremony.

Five laws guide all inductees, helping them be successful in school and out. They are character, scholarship, service, leadership and citizenship.

In addition to the strong academic records (3.5-4.0 grade point averages) which established these students eligibility for membership, the charter members are leaders in many student organizations and plan to serve the school and community through many activities as the Mercer chapter grows.
