Dennis James Jacobson

BESSEMER, Mich. - Dennis James Jacobson, 71, of Bessemer, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013.

He was born Nov. 16, 1942, in Ironwood. Dennis graduated from A.D. Johnston High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1960 to 1963, with honorary discharge. Following his military service, Dennis completed police academy training and served as a police officer for a short time with the Milwaukee police department.

He was a graduate of Northern Michigan University with a bachelor's degree in accounting and was employed for 30 years with the U.S. Defense Finance and Accounting Services.

After retirement, Dennis returned to Bessemer. He enjoyed gardening and riding his vintage farm tractors, especially in Bessemer parades. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He also proudly served as a Gogebic County commissioner for three terms and was a member of American Legion Post 27.

Dennis is survived by his children, Karen (Eric) Leaf, of Grand Haven, and David, of Indianapolis; ex-wife, Elizabeth (Fred) Granger, Fishers, Ind .; and brothers, Richard, Oak Creek, Wis., Wallace (Shane), Spotsylvania, Va., William (Sue), St. Louis Park, Minn., and Michael (Rosi), Bessemer. He also has several nieces and nephews.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary; bother, Robert; and two sisters-in-law, Marilyn and Mary Ann.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Dec. 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer. The Rev. Antony Lukka will be the celebrant.

Dennis' family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church.

Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 27 and VFW Post 3673 combined Honor Guard.

Spring burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer.

Luncheon will follow at church hall.
