95-year-old man enjoys day on slopes

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Edwin Fisher, 95, of Sheboygan, Wis., spent part of his birthday month the best way he knows how Friday, skiing with friends at Big Powderhorn Mountain.

Born in January of 1919, Fisher has been skiing for 65 years, and is happy to come to Michigan to ski as most of "little hills in Wisconsin aren't much of a challenge."

Fisher said he's skied "all over the West," but enjoys coming back to the U.P., especially with friends.

Fisher, a retired mechanical engineer with the Kohler Company, spent the day skiing with a small group of friends, neighbors and former co-workers, including 86-year-old Calvin Wheeler, also of Sheboygan.

"When I started at Kohler, I worked for him," Wheeler said of Fisher, whose been retired for 31 years.

Fisher referred to Wheeler as a "youngster."

Powderhorn's general manager Bruce Noren met up with the ski party and said Fisher didn't "look a day over 80."

"I'm very involved with our historical museum, so that makes me a historic artifact," said Fisher.
