41 Hurley third graders visit the sea caves during recent warm up

HURLEY - Forty-one Hurley third graders made the trek to the ice caves along the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore near Bayfield, Wis., Tuesday.

According to teacher Mike Swartz, the students walked about 3.5 miles to the caves and back.

"They were fine going out there, but on the way back, the sun was shining and the kids started to get hot," Swartz said. "We did bring a sled in case we had any problems, but we didn't have to use it."

Temperatures reached the 40s in northern Wisconsin on Tuesday.

The ice caves have hosted more than 60,000 visitors since January, however the students didn't have to deal with large crowds.

"We pulled in to Myers Beach at around 10 a.m., and there wasn't too many people," Swartz said. "But when we were coming off at 12:30 p.m., there were just people, and more people coming."

For student Courtney Corullo, it was a "long walk," but said she had a lot of fun, and would recommend other people travel to see the caves.

"My favorite part was going into the caves and seeing the big icicles," Corullo said.

Swartz said students enjoyed their time.

"They were in awe of the formations of ice and colors, and how far back the caves went," Swartz said. "It was a big playground for them, and they had a lot of fun."
