Oswald 'Ozzie' A. Vispi

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. - Oswald "Ozzie" A. Vispi, 98, passed away Feb. 22, 2014, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain.

He was the son of the late Enrico and Marie Vispi. Oswald graduated from A.D. Johnson High School in Bessemer in 1933. He received his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1940.

Oswald began his career doing bridge design for the state of Michigan in Lansing. He was transferred to Sault Ste. Marie in 1941 to work on the Soo Locks. In 1943, Oswald entered the United States Army. He served in the Army Corp of Engineers in India, Burma and China. Upon his return from the Army in June 1946, Oswald received his professional engineer license and began working at the Plymouth Mine in Gogebic County, where he remained for nearly 20 years.

In 1960, he married Mildred Doucette and began working for the Dickinson County Road Commission as Dickinson County superintendent engineer. He retired in 1978. In 1961, they welcomed a son, Richard.

Oswald was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Church in Kingsford.

He is survived by his son, Richard (Tamara) Vispi; granddaughter, Sophia; niece, Joann Mindorff; and nephew, Mark Vispi.

Oswald was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; brother, Arnold Vispi; and sister, Alvira Ableman.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will be held at St. Mary Queen of Peace Church in Kingsford at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The Rev. Mike Woempner will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Bessemer, in the spring.
