Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Newspaper in Education program offers students access to newspapers across the country

IRONWOOD - The Daily Globe is celebrating its 10th year of being a part of the Newspaper in Education Program.

NIE is a national program, with thousands of newspapers across the U.S. supplying papers to classrooms.

The Globe delivers 485 newspapers each week to 12 different schools in Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon counties. The papers are used in 30 classrooms in a variety of ways.

According to Lori Hendges, high school guidance counselor at A.D. Johnston School in Bessemer, the papers are used in her study hall, allowing students to have something to read.

"I like using the papers," Hendges said. "Many of the students read the paper for a variety of reasons, and I have one student who loves to do the puzzles."

Other classrooms use the puzzles for things like current events, writing and grammar.

For Marissa Casari, circulation manager at the Globe, said, "It's good to know that the Daily Globe can provide the students with a way to keep up with current events in our area and the rest of the world."

Hendges also said the newspapers provide a sort of change of pace when it comes to the news.

Hendges said, "I personally love the newspaper because it allows me to keep on local events."

Funding for the program is supported by local sponsors.

"The Daily Globe would like to thank all the individual and business sponsors," Casari said. "Their support to the NIE program helps make it possible for the area schools to receive newspapers."
