Hurley fourth graders cook up hearty lumberjack breakfast

HURLEY - Fourth grade students at the Hurley K-12 School took a step back in history Thursday during the annual Lumberjack Breakfast.

Students have been learning about lumberjack camps and traditions during their social studies and reading sections. According to teacher Ronda Olkonen, the students really like the subject matter.

"So many of the students have families in logging, so they can relate," she said.

During the breakfast, students worked with teachers, parents and grandparents to make pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, fruit and their own butter.

"We have so many parents volunteering," Olkonen said. "They just jump right in, which is great."

Teacher Monica Kolpin said, "It's heartwarming that we have parents willing to take time from their busy schedules to do this with their kids. This is really special for the kids, and this is what memories are made of. It makes it a lot more fun for the kids and a lot easier for us, because things can go much smoother."

Groups of students rotated to different stations, whether it was cooking, reading about lumberjacks or participating in activities done at logging camps, including playing cards.

According to Kolpin, the kids are "highly interested and motivated" in learning about lumberjacks.

"It's something new to them, and they like hearing the stories about lumberjack camps and the history of it," Kolpin said.

The plan is to continue the breakfast each year.
