Wakefield city council conducts hearing on 5-year recreation plan

WAKEFIELD - The Wakefield city council held a public hearing on its five-year recreation plan Monday evening.

No public comments were made. The council adopted resolution 213, which approved the plan.

It also approved a capacity agreement with American Electric Power for 2016-17.

City manager John Siira said the council had a similar agreement with Great Lakes Utility. However, now that the city is working with AEP, a new agreement was necessary.

The council approved a 35-page Title VI non-discrimination plan for the city. This plan was a requirement of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. "It seems kind of late on their part," said council member Bob Blaskowski.

The council also heard Siira's update on the spillway gate project. The project close-out documentation was submitted to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources on Feb. 11 and the project will be closed soon.

"The DNR is currently processing our payment," he said.

"We did lower it one more inch today," Siira added, "Hopefully we won't have any major flooding."

The council also heard information on HomeServe, which provides private water service insurance coverage.

"The chance of residents experiencing problems with their water services is slim and the coverage is not necessary," Siira said in a news release.

The next meeting will be held March 24.
