ERWIN TOWNSHIP - More than 90 kids navigated ABR Ski Trails Thursday during the fourth annual River Valley Bank Lapset Loppet Race.

Third grade students from the Hurley and Ironwood schools participated in the 2-kilometer race. According to race coordinator Paulette Niemi, kids aged 5-11 were also invited to participate in the afternoon.

The event was planned during Sisu Ski Fest, but weather conditions caused it to be rescheduled.

"This is a really fun event and is not meant to be a race," Niemi said. "Cross country skiing is a lifelong sport, and it's a fun thing to do with your family."

Niemi said the course was "gentle, rolling terrain" for the kids and each participant received a medal and hot chocolate.

Twenty-five volunteers helped and Niemi said she was appreciative of the volunteers and event sponsor.

"We have volunteers from all over, and our main volunteers were students in Ann Wuorinen's business class," Niemi said.

"There were 10 of them and they helped with everything from helping to put boots and skis on the kids, to serving hot chocolate. I am also thank for our sponsors because without them, we couldn't have this event."
