MERCER, Wis. - Four Mercer School students attended the Superior Days conference Feb. 18-19 in Madison to lobby with other students and adults, a news release said.
Superior Days is a community-based effort to bring important issues from northwestern Wisconsin to the attention of state legislators, according to the Superior Days website.
Before meeting with legislators, students learned about the issue they would discuss in Madison, how to properly shake hands and speak to adults, and how to speak up for themselves and be heard with representatives, Mercer teacher Debbie Hohner said.
"While in Madison, our students spoke to our legislators about two topics related to economic development of the north and western region of Wisconsin," Hohner said. "The issues that our students spoke about were funding for making U.S. 2 a four-lane highway and a differently funded and equitable 911 service throughout the state."
Attendees were also able to job shadow in the capitol or tour the University of Wisconsin campus. "The kids really enjoyed the opportunity to see firsthand one of their options for college," Hohner said.
"The students would like to thank the Iron County Development Committee and the Mercer School for funding this incredible opportunity to not only experience our government in action, but also to represent Iron County," Hohner said.
