SAM director offers comments on ski season

IRONWOOD – With a good amount of snow for the season, Mount Zion closed on March 23.

The ski season wasn't great but it wasn't bad, said Jim Vanderspoel, director of the ski area management program at Gogebic Community College.

"As for the SAM program," Vanderspoel said, "the numbers are good, enrollment is good and it is going very well."

The program helps support Mount Zion as well, as the hill is exclusively groomed operated by SAM students.

"We're adding some classes to the program next year," he said.

For those still interested in winter activities before the snow melts, the Porcupine Mountain trails remain open until April 7.

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available among 87 miles of trail systems. Trails are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
