'Everyone a winner' in annual Meltdown

ONTONAGON - Nearly 500 pounds was lost in the annual Aspirus Ontonagon Fitness Center Meltdown which concluded with an award ceremony Wednesday.

Top awards were based on percentage of loss. Team Flabbergasted with a 24.1 percent weight loss and 46.5 pounds brought John and Diane Dupie the top spot. The placque bearing their name was presented by Kelly Roehm, Fitness Center Manager. Diane Dupie also won the most percentage of weight loss by a female in the contest at 11.7 percent.

Second place went to the Cowpack team of Jeff Rule and Scott Cleary. The duo lost 40 pounds or 19.9 percent of weight. Jeff Rule won the most percentage of weight by a male, 14.1 percent.

The team of Sandy Morin and Kathy Pattison, known as the Girls Just Wanna Have Fudge team, claimed third place at 23 pound loss or 15.5 percent.

Roehm also presented some special awards: best team name "Merry Ex-Mass and Happy New Rear," Jill Corey and Kenny Lee Waldrop; most dedicated female, Ginny Langdon; and most dedicated male, Joe Rowles.

Roehm said she was "very pleased with the genuine effort of the teams in the meltdown." She said the contestants stuck with the work and became a close knit group. She said the Aspirus Ontonagon Hospital has been very supportive of the project and she hopes the contestants will stick with their efforts to keep a healthy habit of exercise.

"No matter how much weight was lost, everyone was a winner," she added.
