Canine officer presenation held at Mercer School

MERCER, Wis. - Working with Iron County Sheriff Tony Furyk, Vilas County officer Ty Peterson and his canine partner Draco conducted a locker and classroom search of the Mercer School on April 16.

The lockdown and search resulted in no suspicious findings, a news release said.

Peterson and Draco then offered a demonstration to Mercer students, staff and community members on law enforcement canine unites and their importance in keeping schools and communities safe.

Assisted by Vilas County officer Joy Kohegyi and Mercer resident Brian Baltz, a former U.S. Air Force canine officer, Peterson and Draco demonstrated narcotics searches and simulated criminal apprehension tactics and evidence retrieval. Peterson also held a question and answer session.

"The students were amazed by the dog's behavior, training and attentiveness," Mercer School Board treasurer Deanna Peirpont said. "Thanks to the Iron and Vilas county sheriff's departments for their service to the Mercer students and school and to the Mercer students for doing things the right way."
