Marianne E. Stancher

HOUGHTON, Mich. - Marianne E. Stancher passed away on Friday, May 2, 2014, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility, where she had been a resident since December 2004.

Marianne was born on Feb 11, 1928, in Ironwood, the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Longhini) Ulasich. She graduated from St. Ambrose High School and worked as a bookkeeper for the Ulasich Brothers grocery store in Ironwood.

On May 23, 1951, she married Arthur M. Stancher at St. Ambrose Catholic Church (Our Lady of Peace) in Ironwood. Because of her efforts at home, her husband was able to co-own and operate a successful grocery store - the Hiway 2 Super Valu in Bessemer.

Mrs. Stancher was a parishioner of St. Sebastian Catholic Church where she was a member of the Ladies Guild, the Prayer Chain and the Daughters of Isabella, and she was also a member of the Grand View Hospital Auxiliary.

Marianne's Catholic faith was important to her, and she spent time in daily prayer. She took pride in being a homemaker; she also enjoyed being in the kitchen and will especially be remembered for her skill in baking cookies, bars, pies, cakes and fudge. Marianne loved and cared for her family, especially her dear husband, Art.

Marianne was preceded in death by her husband, Art; father, John; mother, Liz; and brother, Mattie; brothers-in-law, John and Bruno Pelissero; and sister-in-law, Mary Fiorelli.

Surviving are sons, Deacon Art (Beth O'Brien) Stancher and Dr. John (Sharon) Stancher; daughter, Patricia Peterson; grandchildren, Melissa (John), Craig (Amber), Christopher (Erina), Scott (Holly), Tracey, Laura (Davin), Kristen (Patrick), Becky and John; great-grand children, Ani, Ema, Axl, Connor, Dylan and Lucia; sister, Joanne Hoffner; sisters-in-law, Rosie (Dennis) Aspinwall and Mary Lou Pelissero; brother-in-law, Mario Fiorelli; and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer. Fr. Abraham Mupparathara, MCBS, will be the celebrant, assisted by Deacon Art Stancher.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 7, from 5-7 p.m. at the Frick-Zielinski Funeral Home in Bessemer, with a vigil service conducted by Deacon Art Stancher at 6:45. Visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer.

The family would like to thank those who cared for Art and Marianne while they were residents of the Gogebic and Houghton County Medical Care Facilities. The physical, emotional and spiritual care they received has brought great comfort to all of us.
