Mary D. Fontecchio

MADISON, Wis. - Mary D. Fontecchio, 90, formerly of Ironwood, Mich., died Friday, May 2, 2014, in Madison.

She was born May 6, 1923, in Bessemer, Mich., daughter of the late Max and Anna (Gabardi) Sterny. Mary attended Bessemer schools.

In 1942, she was united in marriage with Herman (Nig) Fontecchio. While living in Ironwood, Mary worked as a cook in several area restaurants. She was known for her homemade pasta, spaghetti sauce recipes and bakery.

Mary resided in Madison with her daughter, Bobbie, and son-in-law, Dennis Tiziani.

She is survived by her three children: two sons, Gint (Diane) and Bill (Sue), and a daughter, Bobbie (Dennis) Tiziani; Joanna (Bert) Saari, close friend and family member; five grandchildren, Gina Tiziani-Beck (Jeff), of Madison, Nicki Stricker (Steve), of Madison, Vikki Hissa (Fred), of Hurley, Mario Tiziani (Kressi), of Minneapolis, and Michael Fontecchio (Lindsey), of Hurley; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by her four brothers, August, Joseph, Leno and Felix Sterny; and four sisters, Teresa Proctor, Irene Boline, Marcella Relich Johnson and Bonita Barthels.

Cremation has taken place at Ryan and Joyce-Ryan Funeral Home in Madison.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Ironwood by the Rev. Robb Jurkovich.

The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday, May 13.

Inurnment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood.
