Cleanup planned for Miners Memorial Heritage Park

IRONWOOD - Friends of Miners Memorial Heritage Park will host their fifth annual spring clean-up on Saturday.

The Miners Memorial Heritage Park is 167 acres of land owned by the city and has been the site of much illegal dumping of tires, appliances and furniture over the years.

According to a release, there is still a problem with people continuing to dump trash in the compost area and park.

"With these clean-ups, the Friends of MMHP hope that people become more aware that throwing trash hurts the community by making it unsightly, unsafe and decreases property values," said Monie Shackleford, president of Friends of MMHP.

Volunteers interested in helping clean the park are asked to meet at Hiawatha Park on Burma Road at 9 a.m. Saturday. A free cook-out will follow.

Volunteers should wear sturdy boots and bring work gloves. Individuals are also encouraged to bring brush cutting tools such as loppers and pruning saws to assist with clearing brush around the Norrie A Shaft.

Anyone with a truck and winch who is willing to pull up large objects is welcomed to attend.
