Storms dominate WIAA meet for second day

La CROSSE, Wis. - The weather was the story of the day once again Saturday and Mercer's Lexi Engler competed in the 200-meter dash and triple jump at Saturday's state track-and-field meet.

Strong storms stopped action just 20 minutes into Saturday's action.

More than 5.5 hours later, at 4:30, running events started again. The meet was also delayed about two hours on Friday due to strong thunderstorms.

Engler finished 10th in Saturday's finals in 26.97, .01 faster than Friday's preliminaries. Columbus Catholic's Alexandra Hutchison won the state title in 25.68.

Engler took 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 33-3. One of Engler's jumps came as it poured - it was her furthest jump - and the other two were dry.

She didn't make the finals. Betsy Schreier of Cashton won in 35-11.75.

Engler also finished 12th in the 100 dash prelims (13.14) on Friday.

Mercer's D'kota Engler took ninth in the pole vault (13-0) Friday and Sydney Thompson was 13th in the shot put (33-7.5).
