Mayme Irene Nurmi

ONTONAGON, Mich. — Mayme Irene Nurmi, 91, of Bruce Crossing, passed away on Wednesday morning, June 18, 2014, in Ontonagon at the Aspirus Long Term Care Unit.

Mayme was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Paynesville, to the late Robert and Hilda (Alapert) Hiitola. She attended local schools.

She was married to Emil Nurmi on March 28, 1942, and they made their home in Bruce Crossing. He preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 1959.

Mayme worked briefly at the Paynesville school as a cook. She spent most of her life as a homemaker. She was an avid watcher of “Finland Calling,” loved old Westerns and old-time country music. Mayme was a member of the Paynesville Apostolic Lutheran Church. If you knew Mayme, you loved Mayme.

Survivors include sons, Roy and Michael, of Bruce Crossing; daughter, Edith (Bill Newby), of Maryville, Tenn .; daughter-in-law, Barbara Nurmi; granddaughters, Amy (Dennis McCarthy), Peggy (Donald Grosso) and Lisa Risku; great-grandchildren, Shaun, Cheyanne, Dylan, Katelyn, Paige and Bodey; several nephews and nieces; and special friend, Alberta McGinty. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Mayme was preceded in death by sons, Carl and George Nurmi; and 13 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Mayme will be held Saturday, June 21, at 5 p.m. EDT at the Cane Funeral Home — Bruce Crossing Chapel.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. and continue until the time of service.

Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
