Rare peccary triplets born at Los Angeles Zoo

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Zoo is welcoming three little - and very rare - piglets.

Officials on Monday announced the birth of three Chacoan peccaries. The triplets were born on June 3.

The pig-like animals are named for the Gran Chaco area of Paraguay, where researchers found the first live specimens in the early 1970s.

Before then, scientists had only fossil records and thought the species was extinct.

Chacoan peccaries are critically endangered because of hunting and habitat loss. Fewer than 3,500 are known to remain in the wild.

The LA Zoo is working with a conservation group to help save the species.
