Kathryn Mary Probelske

IRONWOOD, Mich. - We are sad to announce the passing of Kathryn Mary Probelske, of Ironwood, on March 3, 2014.

She was born May 4, 1918, in Stambaugh, to Kathryn and Gunnard Carlson. Kathryn graduated from Iron River High School, earned her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in social work, and went on to get her master's degree in social work from the University of Michigan. She moved to the Ironwood area to take a position as a caseworker for the state of Michigan, where she spent her entire career serving children and families in Gogebic County.

Ironwood was where Kathryn met and married Edward Probelske, and where they lived happily until his death in 1968. Kathryn continued to call Ironwood her home and was active in the community, serving on the Grand View Hospital board and the city planning commission for many years. Kathryn loved life and lived it to its fullest. Her spunky personality and quick wit endeared her to her family and friends. She loved entertaining and spending time with friends in Ironwood and in Florida. She enjoyed golf, playing bridge and a little gambling in her later years.

She is predeceased by her parents; her husband; her brother and sister-in-law, George and Jean Carlson; and her nephew, Tom Carlson.

She is survived by her nieces and their spouses, Nancy and Steve Albery, Jan and John Ketner and Barb and Jeff McConnell; a niece-in-law, Jean (Dale) Nordby; and great-nieces and nephews, Kristen (Tim) Slater, Todd (Tricia) Albery, Amy Albery, Glenn (Beth) Carlson, Beth (Justin) Newingham, Kathryn (Mark) Rieffenberger, Kristy (Matt) Menghini, Andy (Rachel) Ketner, Megan McConnell, Jay McConnell, Zach Ketner and Molly McConnell; and 13 great-great-nieces and nephews.

Kathryn was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her family and close friends.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, July 5, at 10 a.m., in Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood, with the Rev. Jean B. Rencontre officiating.
