Hoop 'N Holler Tavern holds 13th annual cardboard boat race

MERRIWEATHER - The Hoop 'N Holler Tavern held its 13th annual cardboard boat race on Lake Gogebic Sunday afternoon.

The race consisted of five different age groups, including children up to age 5, ages 6-10, ages 11-16, ages 17-40 and seniors.

One winner was crowned from each age group. First place prize was $25.

Prizes also included toy giveaways for children, the "most patriotic" award and the "Titanic" award.

"It's become a real family affair," tavern owner Carolyn Maves, said.

Those of all ages competed in the races, including Ava and Mason Lopac, who were the only competitors in the youngest age group.

Mark Sizemore, of Bergland, also competed for the first time.

"It took about 25 rolls of duct tape," Sizemore said of his boat. He received the Titanic award.

Race winners included Ava and Mason Lopac, Sawyer Peterson, Kevin Pedley, Kyle Abel and Jake Weisbrod and Carol Pace.
