Robert 'Perly' Perlberg

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Robert Perlberg, 85, of Marquette, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, at Marquette General Hospital after a brief illness.

Bob was born on Jan. 27, 1929, in Ironwood, a son of the late Fred and Theresa (Soraruf) Perlberg.

He was a 1947 graduate of St. Ambrose High School in Ironwood.

Following high school graduation, Bob proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from 1949-52 during the Korean Conflict in Germany where he was involved with ammunitions supply. He was discharged as a staff sergeant.

Bob graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1957 with a degree in education and received a master's degree in history from NMU in 1964. He taught in the Marquette Public Schools system from 1957 until his retirement in 1987.

In his free time, Bob was an avid skier, enjoyed gardening as well as fishing and hunting during his younger years.

He was a life member of Marquette Elks Lodge 405 and was a member of American Legion Post 44 in Marquette.

He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Swanson, whom he married on July 29, 1967, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Escanaba; a brother, William Thomas, of St. Clair Shores; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Coral Swanson, Margo (Ken) Swanson, and Catherine (Dwight) Gilroy; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death, besides his parents, was an infant sister, Marjorie; siblings, Caroline Larsen, Lorraine Matt, Mary Lou Barto, Ferdinand, Gordon, Vincent and John Perlberg.

A funeral service will be held in the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home on Friday at 1 p.m. Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home on Friday. A luncheon will be served immediately afterward in the funeral home.

Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Escanaba on Saturday at 11 a.m.
