Hitchcock recovering from surgery at hospital Reed

HURLEY - Daniel Hitchcock, of Hurley, is recovering well after going through surgery on his left lung as a result of pneumonia last week.

Hitchcock, a 3-4 specialist, has been serving in Afghanistan with the 829th Engineering Battalion of the U.S. Army as a National Guard Reservist since June. He recently became ill with pneumonia and his left lung filled with fluid and the lining of the lung became infected.

He was transported to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and underwent surgery last Friday.

"My soldier boy is healing fast," mother Rebecca Hitchcock said. "I want to thank you all for the prayers. All the support we have got from all of you through this traumatic experience is very much appreciated. And it must be working."

Hitchcock was released from the hospital Wednesday, and will remain in Maryland with his father, Mark, for about another week, before heading home. He will still remain in the National Guard, but his family is very happy to hear he is coming home.

"We're not sure how long he'll be home," Rebecca Hitchcock said.
