Kenny's Studio demolition bid comes in high

IRONWOOD - The city of Ironwood has received only one bid to demolish the former Kenny's Studio building at 227 E. Aurora St., next to the Carnegie Library.

The city commission will meet Monday at 5:30 p.m. in regular session and will consider the bid from Jake's Excavating, of Ironwood, for $75,000.

That cost is apparently too steep because the agenda calls for commissioners to consider rejecting the bid and authorizing a rebidding process.

The parcel containing the former photography studio building was donated to the city by the family of the late Kenny Aho.

Commissioners accepted the donation on behalf of the library.

When the donation was received, it was noted the building is beyond repair and it will be torn down to create more space for outdoor library activities.

At that time, library director Elaine Erickson said the city commission, Downtown Ironwood Development Authority and library would all share in the cost of demolishing the building.

The commission then issued a call for bids, resulting in the Jake's Excavating bid.

Jake's Excavating demolished a former store building at 213 Bonnie St., owned by John Harteloo, on a lesser bid, a key accomplishment in the effort to remove eyesores from the city.

The city commission has scheduled public hearings Monday at 5:10 and 5:15 p.m. on blight at 208 E. Michigan Ave. and 430 Bonnie St.

Blighted property resolutions on those two parcels and one at 715 Leonard St. are on the agenda under old business.
