Devils win home triangular

IRONWOOD - Ironwood won both of its matches in a Tuesday triangular with Wakefield-Marenisco and Bessemer.

The Devils beat Bessemer 25-9, 25-11 and edged W-M 25-23, 26-24, 15-9. W-M defeated the Speedgirls 25-5, 25-17 in the other match.

Ironwood coach Lisa Graham gave her seniors much of the playing time in the first game against W-M on Senior Night and the Devils took the game.

"It was a nice to get a win there," Graham said.

Ironwood went with its normal rotation in the second game, took a lead and lost it. Ironwood led much of the third game.

"It was nice to get that win at the end of the season," Graham said. "That was a tough team (W-M). They're scrappy. They're looking better and better every night."

W-M coach Jessica Novascone said the Cardinals looked to be nervous in the third game, making defensive mistakes they don't usually make.

"I would have liked to have come down with the win, but I'm really happy how they played," she said.

Mariah Beaudette led Ironwood with 11 kills and three blocks against W-M. Emily DiGiorgio had 10 kills and one block. Sarah Johnson totaled nine kills and five aces. Katie Erickson had 23 assists.

Lauren Grace had eight kills for the Cardinals and Hallee Yon had four. Against Bessemer, Rachel Obradovich had seven kills, Hallee Yon four and Grace three. Grace added two aces.

Against Bessemer, DiGiorgio led Ironwood with 12 kills. Beaudette had six kills and Johnson had five. Beaudette had five aces. Erickson totaled three aces and 14 assists. DiGiorgio had two blocks.

Ironwood (23-4) goes to Calumet Tuesday to play L'Anse in a Class C district semifinal.

"Hopefully we play our best game," Graham said.

W-M goes to Bessemer Monday to play Crystal Falls Forest Park in a Class D district game.
