Ironwood sweeps GCC Quiz Bowl titles

IRONWOOD - Ironwood claimed both varsity and junior varsity titles at the recent 15th annual Fall Quiz Bowl at Gogebic Community College.

Eighteen teams from six area high schools, including Bayfield, Bessemer, Hurley, Ironwood, Wakefield-Marenisco and Watersmeet, competed.

"A total of 33 exciting games were held, with many of them with impressive scores," said Carl Vaara, Quiz Bowl organizer.

During the morning rounds of competition, Bessemer I and Ironwood I won their divisions and faced off for the championship in the afternoon.

Ironwood I emerged as the winner, 345-300.

Members of the championship team were Zane Ozzello, Brett Mattson, Riley Jarocki, Jordan Giannunzio and Ian Bentley. The team was coached by Steve Boyd. 

Ironwood II took the junior varsity championship trophy. Members were Robert Burchell, Isaac Aukee, Corissa Mattson and Kinley Lyons. They are also coached by Boyd.    

"It was another exciting day of scholastic competition on campus," Vaara said. "It is a wonderful opportunity for our area students to participate in good academic competition. All of the participants and their coaches should be congratulated."

Vaara is a retired GCC mathematics instructor.

GCC hosts both fall and spring Quiz Bowl events for high school students.
