Wakefield-Marenisco voters approve millage renewal

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco School District voters renewed 1 mill for the school's building and site sinking fund for 10 years Tuesday to continue funding for the purchase of real estate, the construction or repair of school buildings and other purposes authorized by law.

According to superintendent Cathy Shamion, the money will help the district continue to do many projects, including ongoing tuckpointing of the building and perhaps replacing windows and the addition of an elevator.

Tuesday's vote was 609-297, or 67-33 percent.

The estimated revenue in 2015 is about $99,875.

The former 1 mill levy extended for eight years and Shamion said the district made good use of the money. Projects included major work to the roof, turning the old shop room into a kindergarten room and new bleachers.

Shamion said the fund created by the millage has helped the district to not have to go the voters for each major project.

She said eight years ago, the board put together a list of 15 projects and the district was able to finish 13 of them.

School board

Newcomer Stacie Rooni will join incumbents Brad Dalbec, Marsha Vestich and Brandon Yuchasz on W-M School Board. The four were running for four open seats.

Vote totals included: Dalbec 579, Vestich 553, Rooni 542 and Yuchasz 483.

Wakefield city

In the city of Wakefield, voters approved a land sale and millage for the library.

By a vote of 434-92, residents gave the city power to sell land for residential development and connection to city utilities located near the intersection of Mt. Joy Drive and Serpa Road. Because of the property's size, about 10 acres, the sale requires public approval under the city charter.

Wakefield residents also approved a new additional annual tax to fund the public library, 355-174. The tax would not exceed 1 mill and would be in effect from 2015 to 2019, with an estimated revenue of $24,000 for the 2015 calendar year.
