Wakefield council discusses Father Daniel Hall renovations

WAKEFIELD - Despite snowy conditions, a large amount of people attended Monday's Wakefield City Council meeting.

The main topic of the evening was discussion on the Father Daniel Hall renovation updates, including fully moving in, as well as a possible co-share with the city library.

City librarian Denise Engel was in attendance to discuss the possibility of the library moving into the old Father Daniel Hall building.

She posed a discussion with the council about sharing the space in the old Father Daniel Hall and letting the library move in.

It was agreed there needs to be more input from the community on where the library should relocate and a town meeting or a survey were both discussed as possible solutions. Further action will take place in December or later.

The board also discussed the voters approving 1 mill for the library during the mid-term election on Nov. 4. The mill is expected to add around $24,000 to the general fund for five years.

Another topic relating to the Father Daniel Hall was the recommendation of renaming the building to the "Wakefield Municipal Building." Despite the name being synonymous with the location, it was deemed necessary to indicate the location of city business differently. It was approved to rename the building.

Signage for the building was also discussed and a call for proposals was approved. The council set a few specs for the signage, including using stainless steel anchors so as not to rust, as well as the letters be of a metal, like copper or bronze.

The council also approved the process to designate the alley Maria Lane, of which the Wakefield Municipal Building is located, to a "local street." In doing so, the alley will experience considerable traffic increase and under Act 51, in which monies are calculated on mileage, it's in the city's financial interest as well.

The board approved beginning the process.

A few other key decisions from the meeting were the council's acceptance of the Urgent Need Infrastructure grant offered by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the council's approval of the resolution of support for the potential casino on Indianhead Mountain.
