Christmas bazaar draws crowds, offers hearty meal

MERCER, Wis. - Turkey dinners, raffles and crafts! The women of the Mercer Lioness Club hosted their annual Christmas Bazaar Saturday at the community center in Mercer. The club has been hosting this event for over eight years and they continue to make it better every year.

One new addition to highlight for this year's bazaar was the food for purchase. In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday, the Lioness club offered a full turkey dinner, including turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls and dessert.

"The money raised at the Christmas bazaar goes right back to the community," said Lynn Langhoff, a member of the Lioness club.

The money will go towards scholarships as well as community events like the Mercer Health Fair, where the Lioness club hosts vision screenings.

The money raised also goes toward unexpected situations. Joann Rieglar, a member of the Lioness club, shared a recent situation of a child in the community with sight problems. The club rallied around the family and helped raise money in support of the situation.

The Lioness club hosts a number of other events for the community throughout the year, including Christmas for the senior citizens at the senior center in a couple of weeks, bingo nights, a car wash, a barbecue and a dinner and fashion show in May, to name a few. The club puts the community first and foremost in their work.

Their Christmas Bazaar event Saturday brought in 20 different vendor tables of crafters from around the Mercer area and most goods being sold were handmade.

One vendor new to the event this year was the Woods and Blooms Garden Club of Mercer, who help beautify the Mercer area with plants and gardens. They recently planted new trees along Railroad Street.

The garden club also hosts a garden tour every summer in July. All the proceeds raised by the club on Saturday will go toward the up-keep of the Mercer Pocket Park.

The garden clubs table included garden décor, wine crafts, driftwood crafts, plants and more, all donated by club members.

A few members of the Mercer Lion's Club also had a table set up selling raffle tickets for their annual Ice Fishing Jamboree.

The event saw big waves of people coming through with a few lulls throughout the day, but overall the event was a success. The Mercer Lionees Club will now start preparing for their Senior Christmas in two weeks.
