Brutal November ends on quiet note

IRONWOOD - November will long be remembered as one of the most brutal weather months in Ironwood's history.

Statistics from the National Weather Service point out just how severe it turned out to be.

The month ended on a quiet note on Sunday, giving way to below-zero temperatures on Monday in Ironwood and a biting wind.

The November snowfall total of 89.2 inches set a record. It compares to the long-term average for the month of 24.5 inches.

The average temperature of 21.9 degrees fell short of the mark set in 1995, at 19 degrees, but was well below the norm. The 110-year average temperature in Ironwood for November is 29.8 degrees, according to the weather service.

The average temperature for 2014 now stands at 38 degrees, below the long-term norm of 42.2.

Precipitation for the first 11 months of 2014 is nearly 10 inches above average at 42.16 inches, compared to the norm of 32.89 inches.

October summary

The Marquette NWS office has also released its October weather summary for the Upper Peninsula. It turned out to be a much more normal month, weather-wise, than November, as the average temperature of 43.4 degrees in Ironwood equaled the long-term norm and precipitation of 4.14 inches was just .16 of an inch above the norm.

The high temperature for October was 65 on Oct. 24 and the low was 27 on Oct. 10.

Weather highlights for October across the U.P. included:

-A high temperature of 71 at Pelkie in Baraga County on Oct. 24.

-A low of 17 near Munising on Oct. 22.

-The lowest precipitation total for the month was 3.23 inches at Menominee.

-The greatest monthly snowfall was 8 inches near Michigamme in Marquette County.

October was cooler than normal at most U.P. locations and 10 to 14 degrees cooler than September.
