Jean D. Maki

IRONWOOD, Mich. - Jean D. Maki, 89, of South Johnson road, Bessemer Township, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014, in Ironwood.

She was born Sept. 2, 1925, in South Bessemer, daughter of the late Victor and Ida (Anderson) Jacobson.

Jean attended Bessemer Township schools and graduated from the A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer with the class of 1943. She was employed in Detroit and locally as a grocery store clerk.

Jean was a member of the Bessemer VFW Post 3673 Auxillary, the local cribbage leagues and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ramsay. She liked to knit and sew, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

On Dec. 10, 1955, she was united in marriage to Lawrence R. Maki at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bessemer by Rev. Walter R. Leininger. Lawrence preceded her in death on June 19, 2000.

Jean is survived by two daughters, Lynn Maki and Lori (Jim) Bennetts, both of Bessemer; five grandchildren, Chastidy (Tim) Bongiovanni, of Park Falls, Wis., Erica Mortier, of Fifield, Wis., Andrea (Brian) Esberner, of Park Falls, and Brittany and Drew Bennetts, of Bessemer, seven great-grandchildren, Samantha, Alex, Kurt, Lindsey, Brenden, Lexi and Trae; and a great-great-granddaughter, Kadence. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law; Walter (Grace) Maki and Ronald (Pat) Maki, both of Ironwood, and Dean (Mary Ann) Maki, of Valparaiso, Ind .; and many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.

Besides her parents and husband, Jean was preceded in death by brothers, Melvin, Ely, Gunnard, Clarence, Floyd, Clifford and Donald; and sisters, Esther Johnson, Edith Jacobson, Agnes Erickson, Florence Korpi and Jennie Scott.

Funeral Services will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ramsay on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, at 11 a.m. Rev. Timothy Steckling will officiate. Jean's family will receive relatives and friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Wednesday.

Spring burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Bessemer.
