Wanda L. Pete 'Niow-ga bwikwe' (Fourth Woman Standing)

WATERSMEET Mich. — Wanda L. Pete “Niow-ga bwikwe” (Fourth Woman Standing,) 62, a resident of Watersmeet died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at her home under the care of her family and Regional Hospice.

She was born in Phelps, Wis. on May 7, 1952 to William and Marie (Biddell) DeVerney.

Wanda married Robert Pete, Oct. 2, 1972, in Eagle River, Wis. She worked for the Lac Vieux Desert as a substance abuse counselor and for Families First. Wanda enjoyed playing bingo, cribbage and softball.

Wanda is survived by her husband, Robert; three daughters, Renee DeVerney, Christina Tapia, Lisa Scott; two sons, Brian and Brandon Aimsback; two brothers, Wade (Mary) DeVerney, Ward (Michelle) DeVerney; three sisters, Brenda DeAnda, Yvonne (Albert) Pete and Michelle DeVerney; her grandchildren, Anthony Isham Jr., Krysta Diver, Cheyanne Blair and Melissa Blair, great-grandchildren, Maddie Isham, Brayden Isham and Kayden Meyer; brothers- and sisters-in-law; Nancy (Patrick) Pete, Judy (John) McGeshick and Pam (Franklin) Pete; two aunts, Maxine and Gloria DeVerney; nieces, nephews, and family; and special friends Sister Joyce Rybarcyzk and Ty Nagel.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, William, Jr.and Alan DeVerney.

Native American services for Wanda will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at the Forest County Potawatomi Rec Center. Mr. Billy Daniels will lead services; Hartford Shegonnee Drum. Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. on Jan. 12, 2015. Burial will be in the Blackwell Tribal Cemetery. Weber-Hill Funeral Home of Crandon is assisting the family with arrangements.
