Emery honored for role in city fall deer hunt

IRONWOOD - The Ironwood City Commission honored Department of Natural Resources law enforcement officer Grant Emery, of Bessemer, Monday for his role in thinning the deer herd in the city.

Ironwood has conducted bow hunts in the city for the past nine years and Emery has been instrumental in the "implementation and development" of the city bow hunt, noted city clerk Karen Gullan.

Every fall, the city issues deer kill tags that are filled through the cooperation of bow hunters who set up tree-stands on city property.

City manager Scott Erickson said it would have cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past nine years to bring in sharpshooters if there would have been no hunt.

Gullan said there have been few problems with the comprehensive deer management program over the nine years.

Emery received a certificate of appreciation from Mayor Kim Corcoran.
